Plato/Benet Essay:
The Question: Show through detailed examples and discussion, how Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" illuminates your understanding of Stephen Vincent Benet's short story, "By the Waters of Babylon."

The Process: Use my "Peer and Self-Editing Guide" and follow each step for the Introduction and Topic Sentences of Body Paragraphs.

a) Complete your introductory paragraph, following the Handout instructions. (4-5 sentences)
This paragraph introduces the two stories and authors, and answers the question in the Thesis Statement.  It answers how Plato's allegory illuminates your understanding of Benet's story - by answering the question in a clear and thoughtful way. It show the synthesis you are making. Underline your Thesis Statement.

b) Now that you have set up your Thesis Statement, you can write your Topic Sentences for each of your 3 Body Paragraphs. This will require you to know what area of discussion you have chosen for each body paragraph and in what order you will do them. Each TS should set a clear direction for your discussion.
