English 10 Homework for Friday to Tuesday:

**You are to have your Binder Dividers set up in your Binder before Tuesday's class. Have it done before you come to class. I will check them at the the beginning of class.

** Hand in your Theme Paragraph for "The Loons."

New Work: "The Stolen Party" and "The Doll's House." Do this on the CHART.

Read both stories, and IN PENCIL, in full sentences in short paragraphs, develop the sections for "Setting and Mood," Plot and Conflict" and "Character." These should be developed paragraphs that anyone who has not read the stories can understand it!

Have all your "The Loons" work organized and with you tomorrow so I can check it. See below:

The following work below must be completed: I will check this, also:

1. "The Loons": Look up words or concepts that you do not know:

2. " The Loons": You are to discuss/answer the following questions for homework:

a. What does the plaintive, lonely cry of the loons over Diamond Lake symbolize?

b. At the end, why does Vanessa say that Piquette, alone, heard the cry of the loons?

c. In Vanessa's experience, Piquette said only one positive thing in her short and tragic life. What did she say?

Explanation of Theme for "The Loons"

d. The theme of the story: use your handout to help you. A story's theme is the insight or TRUTH about life that is revealed through the details of the story. To understand the theme of a story, you must ask what the central purpose of the story is: What truth about life does it reveal?

**You can unlock the Theme by comparing the lives of the two girls. Create a chart - Vanessa on one side - and Piquette on the other. In bullet form, find 5 or 6 comparisons for each girl. Be prepared to share them tomorrow in class tomorrow - Friday. I will take them in, also.

**The theme of a story can be found in the way the main character has changed in the course of the story, and what they have learned about life.  Another way of thinking of it is theme is a truth about human nature.

**It will be a developed paragraph that identifies the theme and and explains it - for the man next door.
