Ms. Tyre's English 11 Homework for Tues. May 20:
1. Read and print out a copy of the speech given in the BC Legislature today (Thursday, May 14) where the British Columbia government apologized to Chinese-Canadians for their treatment of them. Also watch and listen to a couple of news reports on this historic event, either online or on TV. Take notes.
2. Then, read the article "The Fight of Their Lives." This is an article from 1997 in the Vancouver Sun newspaper about Chinese-Canadians who signed up to fight in World War Two for Canada, both in the Pacific (very dangerous) and Europe, in hopes of becoming Canadians with basic rights. Read it carefully.
3. Referring to the government's apology on Thursday, to the article, and to the news reports, write a thoughtful reflection of 1.5 to 2 pages: 12pt. font, double-spaced, word-processed). A reflection requires you to analyse something, actively attempt to make sense of it and find meaning in it, gain clarity, insights, learn and understanding on a deeper level, and draw conclusions from it. Make sure you are doing all these things. This assignment is due at the beginning of the block on Tuesday.
4. a) Find "Shakespeare Navigator," the online Shakespeare resource and find the Macbeth pages. Read the summary of Act 1, scene 2 and 3. b) Also get acquainted with the characters in these scenes so that you are prepared for Tuesday's class. c) Finally, finish the questions for Act 1, scene 1 in well-written sentences, keeping them in the Poetry section of your binder.
