English 11 Homework for Fri. Oct. 10:
Values Document: Set up a document on your computer where you can reflect on values as we proceed through the course.
This reflection-examination is personal, but it is also worldly, requiring you to look back, look forward, look out at the world and start examining yourself as a moral character in it.
What values do you possess now: both positive and negative? Why? Give examples. Who do you want to become: not in the sense of your occupation, but as living, feeling, human who is going to develop and change and have an impact on others and yourself? How are you going to grapple with the world? What values will guide you to become who you become and, therefore, how you treat others.
You may make reference to any of the ideas, texts, discussions we have in class, if it helps you describe, explain etc.
This is a complex and revealing exercise. I will ask you to show it to me on occasion to ensure that you are developing it, and following the criteria, but you will not be sharing it with anyone else.
Get started! We can talk about it and glean ideas as we proceed through the course.
