English 11 Homework for Monday, Oct. 27:
1. Review the Connotation work you did yesterday. Then respond to the following prompt: "If they give you ruled paper, write the other way."
Write a 350 word response to this idea in your Reflection Log (you may word-process if you want). Consider, particularly, who "they" could be and the connotation of "ruled paper" and "writing the other way." What is the author of this sentence encouraging us to do?
2. Look for the connotation of the word "hearth." Bring your notes on this.
3. Look at the myths and legends of "salamanders" and create a set of notes on this as well.
4. Look up the concept "allusion" and write the explanation down. Find 3 examples of allusion and make notes.
Now look up and define or explain a) Tower of Babel b) who are Millay, Whitman, Faulkner, Benjamin Franklin, Dante, Swift, Marcus Aurelius, Little Black Sambo, Uncle Tom's Cabin.
Explain the who, what, when, where, why (W5) of this quote: "Play the man, Master Ridley; we shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out." Bring your notes.
