Ms. Tyre's English 10 Homework for the Winter Break: Due Monday, Jan. 6.

I am here in class tomorrow to look at your Thesis Statements or help in other ways. I expect you to come to class after activities in the Gym.

1. TKMB Outline: You should be working on this essay outline over the Winter Break.

Your Thesis Statement should define what your theme is and what we learn by it.  Think about the following to help you write your Thesis: How does the novel define and show the following:

1. What is real courage according to this story?  What isn't? What can real courage teach us?

2. According the to story, what is real education? And what do we learn from it that we can't in a classroom?

3. Growing up is a lot of different things and processes. What/Who forms us? What is it to grow up? What are the benefits, for individuals and society?

4. What is the impact of prejudice on individuals and society? How does it hurt everyone, including those with the attitude.

You are to use your Acceptable Handout Outline to create your outline and you are to include a full sentence Concluding Sentence at the end of each of your Body Paragraphs.

Each Topic Sentence of your Body Paragraphs must have a quote (direct reference) integrated into the Topic Sentence that will be the director of your paragraph discussion.  Therefore, each quote must help you develop the Thesis-Theme.

You are to write a proper Concluding Paragraph with a Thesis Reworded and an interesting look at how your theme might be important to us in our time or the future.

Ms. Tyre's English 9 Homework for Mon. Jan. 6:

1. Romeo and Juliet Tragedy Plotline: have your plotline up to date to the last scene we have done. Unless you are a very neat printer, I would suggest you word-process your work in 12 pt. ft. and cut and paste your work to the large plotline on your large piece of paper.

2. Act 2, scene 2 Figurative Language: Revise/Rewrite all your entries for this assignment, making them better that your 1st drafts.  Word-Process them and put them in your Binder.

3. Act-scene Questions:  Finish all these questions to where we left off in the script.  Your answers should be in full sentences, and as many as you need to answer the questions well.  If you want to incorporate quotations in your work, please do so.  Remember to cite those direct references at the end of the sentence it is in.  ie  (3, 2, 15-16).

Do do this you need to identify 3-5 direct references (quotes) from the novel that will help you develop the theme, that you will incorporate into your body paragraphs.  Your Introduction and Conclusion do not require these references in them.  Your thesis statement is a declaration of the theme and what it reveals about human nature.

Ms. Tyre's English 10 Homework for Thursday, Oct. 10:

1. We will finish the Presentations tomorrow, but your work tonight is to revisit your "Allegory of the Cave" tonight and start improving it.  You need to look at those prisoners and what they teach us.  How do they behave, what does it do to them?  What is this shadow world and how does it reflect how we live? Who are the puppeters in our world?  What does this allegory show about human nature and our ability to "see" the truth around us? What does the prisoner who escapes endure?  What is the process by which he can finally "see"? There are several steps: what are they?  What does this tell us about how we learn?  What is the response of the other prisoners when he returns to enlighten them?  Why do they respond this way?

This is an allegory that shows us some very unflattering aspects of human beings.  Do we like the truth?  How do we know the truth?  What is it to be educated?  What do most people prefer to live in: the cave or the light? Is it better to acknowledge one's ignorance or pretend we know things we don't?  Which person as the edge: the one who admits it or the one who think they know the truth?

What does the allegory promote as of guide for living a truer life?

Ms. Tyre's English 9 Homework for Tuesday, October 1:

1. Personal Reflection on Your Connection to Nature: This is your main work over the long weekend. This is a developed 5 (or 6) paragraph essay that is a first-person reflection on your connection to nature. You will use your real life examples to show that "connection" you identify in your Thesis Statement.  It will be word-processed, 12 pt. font, TNR.  IT IS DUE ON TUESDAY FOR EDITING.

2. Glossary: keep up with the new words you are encountering. Follow the format I have given you.

3. Paragraph of "Nature not as cute, cuddly as it seems." This is a paragraph that answers the question:  What does this article reveal about nature?  Follow the paragraph handout.  You will have written your original in class on Thursday, but you are to take it home and do a self-edit.  Then you are to word-process your second draft.  It should show improvement. You are to bring both in on Wednesday: 2nd Draft on top of the original.

Ms. Tyre's English 10 Homework for Monday, Sept. 30:

1. Allegory of the Cave:  This needs to be improved, both in formatting and in content.
Redo your chart in bullets that are written in full sentences; this will be written for both the surface and underlying meanings.  Read your Allegory paragraph by paragraph and show surface and underlying meanings explaining each sufficiently.  Your understanding and writing of the growth of the prisoner that escaped is important.  It is painful. Deal with his growth carefully. And also deal carefully with the other prisoners and their life.  This is due on Monday.

2. Babylon Paragraph: Finish your 1st Draft of your paragraph discussing the symbolism of Babylon.  Do a self-edit, preferably after you have had someone read it and give you feedback. Use a different coloured  pen or pencil looking for your errors in sentences, punctuation, vocabulary and transitions.  Write a 2nd Draft that shows improvement and word-process it. In fact, it is better if you do your rewriting on a Word document.  This is due on Monday.

3. "Many Workmen": Your second draft is due Tuesday.  Make sure to staple your 1st Draft underneath the 2nd.

3. Start a Glossary:  you should be building your vocabulary throughout the course. When you learn new words, enter them in your Glossary in your binder and use the following format:

Word:  part of speech (Noun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb)
Definition: choose the definition that is appropriate for the context the word is used in
Sentence: write an original sentence the clearly shows you understand the meaning of the word.

Use this format for all words.
