English 10 Homework for Wednesday, March first 29th:

1. Be ready to finish your Essay by the end of your block tomorrow.  You will also need some time to look through your essay to find any errors etc., before you hand it in.

English 12 Homework for Wednesday, March 1st:

1. Look online for one or two good Biographies of Edward Burtynsky. What is his art form? How does he do it? Why does he do it? Have some examples of the kinds of photographs he has created.

English 12 Homework for Tuesday, 28th:

1. Question 2: Wilson concludes that if we are indeed spiritually and physically bound to the natural world, our current destruction of nature will "harm...all the generations to come." Do you see any evidence of this "harm" in your peers - and in the society you live in.  

Show real life examples of the harm and be prepared to discuss them.

English 12 Homework due Monday, 27th:

Rearch and Note-taking:

1. Be prepared to discuss the controversy  about the Vancouver Aquarium and whales. Be thorough and look into the past as well. Take notes and be prepared to share your work.

2. Decline of Species Research: Look on Science and Nature sites online (there are many excellent ones) to understand and to get up to date information on the number of species that are in crisis and in decline. Have a number of detailed examples to share. Have reasons why, and what is being done about it. 

3. Also, be prepared to discuss why it is important to be looking at this. Why does it matter?

We should have a rich conversation on Monday. Have great notes with you.

English 12 Homework for Thursday to Monday, Feb. 27:

1. Look up a concise biography of Edward O. Wilson. Be prepared to share your understanding of his work with the class.

2. Read the article, "Humans Are Innately Connected to Nature" by Edward O. Wilson. I suggest you read it 2 or 3 times to understand it well.

3. Look up all words you do not understand and create a glossary of words:

Word: Definition

4. Do question 1 for Thursday. You will share your thoughts tomorrow at your tables. 

5. Do Sentence by Sentence Revisions of for Entitlement Essay for Monday.

English 10 Homework for Thursday to Monday:

1. Thursday: in this Block you should finish the Chart and start your Outline, using the Handout I gave you.

3. Monday: you will begin writing the Essay, using your Outline.

Also:* Please do not use the word "I" in your essay. Also, quotation marks are required for titles of "Short Stories." 

*Remember: you are writing for a stranger - or your Mother! They have to understand it.

Be organized, be clear, be thoughtful and have a heart for these characters - these are stories of the heart, children being ostracized and dehumanized by others.

1. Finish Imagery for "The Doll's House" and "The Stolen Party."

English 10 Homework for Friday to Tuesday:

**You are to have your Binder Dividers set up in your Binder before Tuesday's class. Have it done before you come to class. I will check them at the the beginning of class. 

** Hand in your Theme Paragraph for "The Loons."

New Work: "The Stolen Party" and "The Doll's House." Do this on the CHART.

Read both stories, and IN PENCIL, in full sentences in short paragraphs, develop the sections for "Setting and Mood," Plot and Conflict" and "Character." These should be developed paragraphs that anyone who has not read the stories can understand it!

Have all your "The Loons" work organized and with you tomorrow so I can check it. See below:

2. " The Loons": You are to discuss/answer the following questions for homework:

a. What does the plaintive, lonely cry of the loons over Diamond Lake symbolize?

b. At the end, why does Vanessa say that Piquette, alone, heard the cry of the loons?

c. In Vanessa's experience, Piquette said only one positive thing in her short and tragic life. What did she say?  

Explanation of Theme for "The Loons"

d. The theme of the story: use your handout to help you. A story's theme is the insight or TRUTH about life that is revealed through the details of the story. To understand the theme of a story, you must ask what the central purpose of the story is: What truth about life does it reveal?

**You can unlock the Theme by comparing the lives of the two girls. Create a chart - Vanessa on one side - and Piquette on the other. In bullet form, find 5 or 6 comparisons for each girl. Be prepared to share them tomorrow in class tomorrow - Friday. I will take them in, also.

**The theme of a story can be found in the way the main character has changed in the course of the story, and what they have learned about life.  Another way of thinking of it is theme is a truth about human nature.

**It will be a developed paragraph that identifies the theme and and explains it - for the man next door.

English 12 Homework Friday and Tuesday: Synthesis Essay due Friday:

1. Overviews are due by Monday.

2. Set up for Portfolios: You must have your 8 Dividers set up before class on Tuesday. 

3. Homework over the Weekend due Tuesday:  Read "Articles of Faith: The Unfortunate Age of Entitlement" by Anthony B. Robinson. Read it carefully and more than onceLook up words you do not know, especially the word/concept of "entitlement."  

Read the "Directions" for this essay, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and prepare your essay on the "Question" in bullet form. These are NOT full sentences but short fragments. Bring everything Tuesday.

You will write the essay in class on Tuesday.

English 10 Homework for Friday to Tuesday, February 7:

Have your Binder Dividers by Thursday so we can set up our Portfolios.

On Monday continue the work on "The Loons" to as far as you can, preferably by Tuesday.

On Tuesday we will continue on the essay. 

1. "The Loons": Read the short story, "The Loons" by Margaret Laurence. Read it carefully and more than once, so that you understand it and can work with it.

2. After reading, go back and do a Vocabulary list of all the words you do not know and organize your Vocabulary list in the following  way for each word:

Word: Metis: a person of both French-Canadian and Native heritage.  

Allusions: these are references to historical figures,  famous events, literary works, or  literary persons. "The Loons" has several historical figures. Find them and write down who they are.

**Please have the following questions completed by Monday.  Develop your answers so that a stranger would understand them.

Questions:

1. Describe the "settlement" where the Tonnerre family lived.

2. Explain the racial and ethnic origins of the Tonnerres and their place in the society of Manawaka.

3. Explain why Dr. and Mrs. MacLeod decide to take Piquette to Diamond Lake.

4. Why does Piquette react in a hostile way when Vanessa suggest that she must know "a lot about the woods"?

On Tuesday we will finish the Personal Essay.

5. Describe Piquette's appearance when Vanessa meets her in the cafe.

6. How has Piquette spent her time during the four years since they visited the lake?

7. Throughout the story, Vanessa never seems to know what to say to Piquette. What is the reason for this problem?

8. Describe how Piquette dies.
