English 12 Homework for Tuesday, March 1:

Any work outstanding is due tomorrow.

1. Revise and hand in "Unknown Citizen" theme paragraph by Tuesday: Lucy, Emma, Ricky, Cameron, Jessica, Sean.

English 9 Homework for Tuesday, March 1:

1. Any late work that you have not handed in is due tomorrow.

2. Read the short story, "The Curio Shop" at least two times: a) add to the Glossary section of your Binder, any words you do not know and define them in the format I have asked you to.

3. Tomorrow you will work with a NEW partner on the "Activities" on the back of the story. Develop your answers and questions. This is due on Wednesday.  On Wednesday we will have a question and answer period, and then you will work on a cover design.  



English 11 Homework for Tuesday, March 1:

1. Any work that was due on Monday that did not come in, is due Tuesday.

2. "The Destructors": Complete the first five questions, developing your answers in paragraphs with integrated quotes where it makes sense.

English 12 Homework for Monday, Feb. 29:

1. Be working on your ideas, vocabulary, organization, etc. for your Synthesis Essay that you will continue on Monday and Tuesday.

Also, if you have any work outstanding, please have it in by Monday.

English 9 Homework for Monday, Feb. 29:

1. Booktalk: You will be prepared to share your book with a group. You must have your Booktalk write-up completed for use.

2. Short Story Chart: You should have well- developed content in your Chart for "Soft Rains" and "If I Forget Thee, Oh Earth." 

3. Revision of "Soft Rains" paragraph: staple the second draft on top of the original.

4. Glossary: You should have several entries in your Glossary by now.  Get these up to date by Tuesday.  I will be looking at them and having a test on them.


English 11 Homework for Monday, Feb. 29:

1. "Pedestrian/Vonnegut"Revisions are due: use the same revision style as the last revisions.

2. Complete all "The Smile" questions and paragraphs. 

3. Any other work that you have not completed must come in on Monday, also.

English 9 Homework for Friday, Feb. 26:

1."April 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains": You should have completed your Chart entries for this story.

2. "If I Forget Thee, Oh Earth...": Read this story two or three times, and start entering your ideas on the Chart. Try to get three or four entries done today. Make sure you look up words you don't know.

3. Revisions: Please be working on your rewrite of your "Soft Rains" paragraph.  Please have this done by Monday.

1. Please see Thursday's Blog.  You can hand in your "Pedestrian/Vonnegut" revisions if you are finished. They are all due Monday.

2. Keep working on "The Smile" questions and paragraphs.

1. Rewrite your theme paragraph for the "Unknown Citizen" if I gave it back to you. 

2. You can also be developing your synthesis chart to get ready to start writing tomorrow, if you can.

English 12 Homework for tomorrow, Feb. 25:

1. Write a Theme paragraph for "The Unknown Citizen."  This should be a developed paragraph of approximately 4-6 sentences. It is not one sentence, as it needs development to be understood. You may integrate a quote or two into the paragraph, but it/they must be concise. Due tomorrow. Please word process.

You should go through the same process for the other two texts, or start writing developed bullets. 


English 9 Homework for Thursday, Feb. 225:

1. "April 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains": Finish the theme paragraph of Bradbury's story. It should be word-processed, 12 pt. ft., double-spaced, and revised very carefully before you print it out. Your concluding sentence could express the importance of the story's theme in our times.

2. Booktalk: Will will be sharing our novels on Monday, in pairs or groups of three. Please follow the Handout and Example to format and develop your Booktalk.


English 11 Homework for Thursday, Feb. 25:

1. Revisions for "The Pedestrian" and "Vonnegut's Dystopia May Not Be Far Off," should be done by Monday, the 29th. Do the same process as the previous revisions.

2. "The Smile." Be working on the questions. Please follow the format on the Handout. There are five paragraphs to write. I expect you to integrate direct references from the story in your paragraphs. Remember, these are concise, not long-winded, and worthy of using.  This is not due until Friday morning at 8:20, both A and C Block. 

This means you have tonight and tomorrow's class to finish it. Bring your computers tomorrow if you like.

1.  Short Stories Chart: You are completing the chart for "April  2026, There Will Come Soft Rains."  Be thorough and NEAT.  Do not do Point of View or Symbolism.  USE PENCIL, as you may need to change some things.

2. Read"If I Forget Thee, Oh Earth..." carefully and more than once.

2. Synthesis work: be working on the ideas for synthesis of "The Unknown Citizen," "Repent, Harlequin," and the excerpt of Henry David Thoreau.

English 12 Homework for Tuesday, Feb. 23:

1. S.I.F.T:  Do the S.I.F.T. for "The Unknown Citizen." Read the poem, carefully, several times to get the flow of ideas; then write up each question clearly, following the Handout. Always use examples from the text to develop your answers. Be organized, thoughtful and start thinking about how this poem mirrors important aspects of "Repent, Harlequin," and the paragraph Civil Disobedience, by Henry David Thoreau. 

2. Sentence-by-Sentence Revisions of "Stop Googling," and "Over Our Heads," synthesis. Use the same format as the last revisions. These are due at the end of the week. 


English 9 Homework for Tuesday, Feb. 23:

1. "There Will Come Soft Rains": Do questions 4 and 5. These are reasonably developed paragraphs.  Remember, you are to write for a stranger, so you must be thorough.

*For Question 4: identify and explain the metaphor in paragraph 16. 

*For Question 5: In 4 to 6 bullets, show the similarities our society has with the society of Bradbury's story. Use your understanding of the work you have done on environmentalism to do this. A bullet is a paragraph of 4-6 sentences that answers the question. 

*Get started on this tonight: come with 2 paragraphs done.

**Booktalk will be due on Monday, 29th. We will go over the expectations tomorrow.

English 9 Homework for Monday, Feb. 22:

1. "There Will Come Soft Rains": Complete questions 1, 2 and 3.  Be thorough in your answers. Each answer should be a paragraph that is developed, because it shows with examples,  and explains, clearly. Remember, you are writing for the "Guy" behind us, across the fence. 

2. Imagery: imagery is vivid description and is an important element in stories. The five senses we humans have, createa imagery: sight/visual, smell, touch, taste and sound. Write this paragraph in your Elements of Literature section of your Binder.

3. Booktalk: Continue reading your independent novel. We will set a date for Booktalk next week. You should be close to finishing it and should already be creating your Booktalk document.

 


English 12 Homework for Monday, Feb. 22:

1. "Repent Harlequin": Work through all the Elements of Literature for this short story. Each of them - plot/conflict, character and motivation, dialogue and vocabulary, mood/tone, and theme, all need to be well understood and developed in your notes. 

You also must have chosen "direct references" in the form of quotes, to use in a writing assignment.

Also know the introduction by Henry David Thoreau very well.

English 12 Homework for Thursday, Feb. 18:

1. "Repent, Harlequin!" Said the Ticktockman: Work through the short story, keeping excellent and thorough notes in the following areas of Literature: 

1.Plot/Conflict                                                  2.Characters and their motivations     3.Dialogue and interesting vocabulary   4.Mood/Tone                                                          5.THEME

All of these elements need to be well developed and include important examples.


English 11 Homework for Monday, Feb. 22:

1. These three texts -  a)"Who Saw Murder"  b) "The Pedestrian," c) Toth's article, particulary the theme of conformity, as depicted in "Harrison Bergeron" and in the use of technology - all examine important and disturbing aspects of human nature. 

Your assignment is to examine yourself by entering each of these texts and reflecting on what you would do in each case, and why.  

Don't be shallow, be real. This is a self-examination, by putting yourself in each of these situations, in order to discover/illuminate your morals and ethics - your "human nature."   

Please develop your ideas in bullet form, and in paragraph structure. Each bullet is a paragraph that is well-developed, and primarily personal reflection with the texts, with clear examples, textual and personal.

How many bullets? As many as you need.

Come Monday with developed bullets, but the full assignment is due at the beginning of the block on Tuesday.

English 11 Homework for Wednesday, Feb. 17:

1. Reread "Who Saw Murder Didn't Call the Police" by Martin Gansberg. This is a better version. You will need to reread in order to do the questions I've assigned.

Read the questions and start to work on them. tomorrow you will work on these with your group.

Meaning and Values: 1a, 3a and b                  Expository Techniques: 1a, b, c... then 2a and b...then 3a...then 4a and b...then 5...then 6...then 8a.

 

English 9 Homework for Wednesday, Feb. 17:

Clothes Drive: Let's fill a good-sized box with clothes for some children who need them!

1. Write a short paragraph on the WMO. Include who they are and what they do, using some examples.

2. Reread Stephen Hume's article and choose 12-15 words that you are not familiar with, and are important for understanding, and include them in your Glossary. Include the Word, Definition, Sentence.

3. Continue reading your novel. We will be in Booktalks early next week.

English 12 Homework for Wednesday, Feb. 17:

1. Read "Repent, Harlequin! Said the Ticktockman" (the better one)  at least two times.

2. Look up words that you do not know and enter them, and the definitions, into the Glossary section of your Binder. Follow my instructions on the format:

Word:                                                     Definition:                                                           The sentence it is in. 

The nonsense words do not need to be defined or explained. 

I will be checking this work, and checking that all English Binders are set up properly. 


English 9 Homework for Tuesday, Feb. 16:

1. Read the article "The Great Pacific Garbage Patch: Out of Sight, Out of Mind" carefully and twice.  

2. Go on the the website www.algalita.org and look around the site to get a good understanding of the issue. Take notes and be prepared to discuss this in class tomorrow.


English 11 Homework for Tuesday, Feb.  16:

1. Read the article "Who Saw Murder Didn't Call the Police" by Martin Gansberg. Read it carefully and a couple of times.

Do questions "Meanings and Values" 1a, 3a, 3b, and look up words you don't know ie. "paradigm."

Do question 8a, and look up "sentimentality."

English 9 Homework for Monday, Feb. 15:

1. Synthesis Paragraph of three texts: Take the time to do an excellent paragraph of the three texts. Word process your work in 12 point font, Times New Roman, and double-space it. Your paragraph should not be more than one page.

Do not print your paragraph until you have edited it thoroughly and read it many time.

Please staple all your other drafts UNDERNEATH the final draft.

2. Be reading your novel over the weekend, also. Enjoy it all!!

1. Revision of Synthesis Paragraph: Please look carefully at your editor's suggestions and write a full revision of the paragraph. You may add or subtract content and/or rearrange it.  You are attempting to improve it in a variety of ways, especially the written expression and the ideas.  Please staple the original paragraph UNDERNEATH the revision.

2. Also, be reading your independent novel daily.

English 11 Homework for Friday, Feb. 12.

#1. Synthesis Essay : You are working on your Outline for the synthesis essay tomorrow. You have a double-sided outline already.  Add what you learned today that you believe would enhance your development of ideas. You will write it in class tomorrow, and possibly Monday, if necessary.

#2. Eng. 11 and 12 Revisions of "Who Am I?" essay.  Please do a sentence-by-sentence revision following the Handout I gave you. If there is only one or two small errors in a sentence, follow my Handout, by crossing out a word, then putting a better one after it.  

However, if you need to completely change a sentence, please do so and underline it all to indicate that the sentence is completely changed. 

*This revision is due on Monday, so work on it over the weekend and follow the instructions.

 


English 12 Homework for Friday, Feb. 12:

1. Synthesis Essay:You will writing the Synthesis Essay, "Stop Googling" and "Over Our Heads" starting tomorrow.  Add more ideas to the chart of bullets that you have been working on, and bring this with you tomorrow.

2. Revisions of "Who Am I?" essay. Please follow the Sentence by Sentence Revision Handout I gave you. Every error in a sentence must be crossed out, and the proper word or phrase inserted. Follow the Handout! Look at the instructions on the English 11 Blog. !! These are your instructions, also. 

Work on this revision over the weekend, and preferably on a word processor.

English 11 Homework for Thursday, Feb. 11:

1. Work on your bullets/ideas for the Synthesis of "The Pedestrian" and "Vonnugut's Dystopia May Not be so Far Off." It is also worth reading Vonnugut's story, "Harrison Bergeron" for a deeper understanding, and to use in your synthesis.  Bring this well-developed set of bullets with you tomorrow.

English 9 Homework for Thursday, Feb. 10:

1. Synthesis Paragraph of "Scientists Agree World Faces Mass Extinction" and "World's 7.5 Billionth Baby Has Little to Look Forward To."

**Please word process your paragraph, double-spaced, 12 pt. font, Times New Roman, and underline your Topic Sentence and the Concluding Sentence. 

**Always double check everything, reading the paragraph through several times so you find all the areas you need to improve.

**You should also be reading your novel regularly. I will have you bring it to class soon to share with your group.

1. You will finish the in-class essay tomorrow before the end of the block. 

2. Make sure you have completed all the work for "The Pedestrian" and "Vonnugut's Dystopia May Not Be So Far Off," as you will creating a synthesis of the two texts. Please reread Tuesday's blog to ensure that you have done the work.

1. Read each of the articles carefully so that you know them well. Take notes.

2. Write the main points of each article in bullet form. (several bullets)

3. Include some important details that will enrich the paragraph when you come to write it.

Tonight work on #1 and #2. Tomorrow you can share your work with your partner and continue on to 3.

4. Please start reading your novel. I will give you two weeks to finish this first novel.

English 12 Homework for Tuesday, Feb. 9:

Overviews should all be in by Tuesday. All Binders should be organized. 

1. Synthesis of Two Texts: Read the article "Stop Googling. Let's Talk." Read it carefully two or three times. Do the same with the article, "Over Our Heads." 

In both texts look up words you do not know and put them in your Glossary section of your Binder. See the example below:

Word: discombobulating                      Definition: go to a dictionary for the definition   Word: write the word in the sentence from the article. 

2. Then, in point form, show how the two articles are both similar and different in the ideas they discuss.  You should have several bullets, that show and explain the similarities and the differences. This is analysis. Read carefully and be thoughtful.

* a bullet is a developed number of sentences that shows and discusses a similarity or difference in the ideas of the text(s).


English 9 Homework for Tuesday, Feb. 9:

1. Read the articles "Scientists Agree World Faces Mass Extinction" and "World's (7.5 Billionth Baby) Has Little to Look Forward To." 

2. In the Glossary section of your Binder, write down and define all the words you do not know in these two articles. When you do this, each word entry must be organized and written in the following way: 

Word:                                                      Definition:                                                          Sentence: Write the full sentence that the word is in, and underline it

This assignment will take you some time. Do it well. Pace yourself.

3. Choose a novel that you would like to read from the school or Richmond library. Bring it with you on Tuesday.

English 11 Homework for Tuesday, Feb.  9:

1. Short Story and Article Synthesis: Read "The Pedestrian" by Ray Bradbury, then read Anna Toth's article from the Richmond Review, "Vonnugut's Dystopia May Not Be So Far Off."

 After reading them both two or three times, do a synthesis of the two texts in point form.

A synthesis is bringing two or more texts together and finding similarities and differences in them. What elements or ideas in the "The Pedestrian" are similar in Toth's article. What do they show about society and where it is going? Spend the time to do it well, and bring your work to class on Tuesday. Be thoughtful, and have 4 or 5 bullets for each.

* also know who Vonnegut is and what he writes so you do this well.

English 9 Homework for Fri. Feb. 5:

1. Your Binder Setup is due tomorrow. I will be checking it.

2. You are to have a chosen a novel by Tuesday. If you already have one, please bring it to class so I can register it in my book.

3. Research on Ecosystems: You should have finished your notes on the 7/8 ecosystems. Tonight you are to take notes on - The World's 6 Most Pressing Environmental Issue-And What You Can Do To Help Solve Them. You will find this on inhabitat.com, or just use the title.  

You are to read the page and take good notes: of the issues, and the ways we can help.

3. Binder Setup is due tomorrow, also. Your binder should be set up for me to see.

English 11 and 12 Homework for Friday, Feb. 12:

1. Binder Dividers set up by Friday. 

2. Signed Overviews by Monday. 

3. Keep working on your essay ideas/examples tonight (Big Paper). You should have started your essay on the "official paper." If you haven't, you should be tomorrow. Your essay is due the end of class on Tuesday.

English 9 Homework for Wednesday, Feb. 3:

1. English 9 Overview: your parents must read and fill out the last page with the information I am asking for. They are to write down of my information, including the Homework Blogspot. Please have this in by Monday.

2. Binder Setup is due on Friday. It should be completed and in your Binder.

3. Independent Novel for Monday: choose a novel from the SLSS library or Richmond Library by Monday.

4. Biosphere Homework: go online to a few different sites to get sufficient information on the Earth's Biosphere: a) find a photograph, explain what it is and what it is made of b) explain how it is essential for life to have been created c) explain how we need it to survive, and d) how is the health of the Biosphere?

Be working on ideas for your Personal Essay that begins tomorrow. 

Create a series of questions about yourself : who are you now? Why? Who do you want to be? Why? How will you change or grow. What is important to you. Why? How do you engage in the world - home, community, globally? Give examples to show all this, and look toward your future self, and where are you going? What aspects of the world are you interested in? What do you know about the world and global events? Why or why not? How might you affect the future? Who do you want to be in this world? Why?
