English 10 Homework for Monday, Jan. 4:

1. Dialectical Journals: Please follow my instructions on the Handouts you have. Follow the format I gave you, and be thoughtful in your choices and responses. 

You are to complete this assignment by Monday, Jan. 4.  Bring your work with you, as you will be in Groups to discuss the novel.

English 10 Homework for Thursday, Dec. 17:

1. Dialectical Journals: You should have started reading your novels, and started to begin your Dialectical Journals.  I would like to see one or two tomorrow, just to give you some feedback.

If you have any questions about these, ask for clarity tomorrow.


English 9 Homework for Thursday, Dec. 16:

1. Have your Headlines completed to then end of Act 1, Scene 4. 

2. Have all your Act 1 questions up to date: end of 1, 4.  Write in sentences and develop your answers by using examples and direct quotes.

3. Rewrite the Sonnet in modern English. 

4. Explain in your own words what has happened between Romeo and Juliet.

English 9 Homework for Wednesday, Dec. 16:

1. Revise the Cupid/Romeo paragraph for tomorrow, if you got 4 or less. Follow a proper paragraph structure: a topic sentence, a developed discussion, good examples, good synthesis. Double-space and word process.

2. Headlines: be creative and write the Headlines for the scenes we have completed. Encapsulate the scene in a clever Headline.

3. Questions/Answers: Keep up with the questions. Do them is full sentences and develop them enough that a stranger would understand them.


English 10 Homework for Wednesday, Dec. 16:

1. "Ozymandias" is due tomorrow. Just hand in your best copy. Please include the S.I.F.T. with it, stapled underneath.

2. Please keep 'Poetic Devices and Figurative Language" Handout until after the Winter Break. You will need it for to start your Dialectical Journal.

3. Make sure all of your Handouts are in by tomorrow.

4. Set up your Binder or Notebook to begin the reading and writing of your Dialectical Journal. You will start reading in Wednesday's class.

English 10 Homework for Tuesday, Dec. 15:

1. All work that was not handed in Monday, is due tomorrow.

2. Two Poems Synthesis: Please read "Gracious Goodness" and do the MC.  Then read the poem"To Have Succeeded" and do the MC.

3. Write a synthesis paragraph discussing the common theme of these two poems. 

(The Book Thief has 10 Parts or Chapters)


English 9 Homework for Tuesday, Dec. 15:

1.Romeo and Juliet: Those who did not do the paragraph showing similarities between Cupid and Romeo's situations, please do it tonight and hand it in tomorrow: Jordan, Elijah, Ben, Tiffany.

1. Romeo and Juliet: Do all questions from Act 1, i to 1, iii.  

2. Also, write the Paragraph Question: Who do you believe is the better parent, Capulet or his wife? Why do you think so? Do not use the first person "I" or "me."

Do not use first person "I" in this paragraph. This should be a well-developed paragraph that declares clearly who is the better parent, and WHY. Use a 12 pt. ft., Times New Roman, and double-space!

English 10 Homework for Monday, Dec. 14:

1. S.I.F.T. : Revise your S.I.F.T. of "Ozymandias" after our in-class analysis. Organize it as a developed paragraph, using the analysis we did in class (and more if you want to.) It should be one page, double-spaced at the most, with a few integrated quotes, following the handout on integration I gave you. So, improve your analysis, vocabulary, theme and paragraphing.

2. Revision of Animal Farm Synthesis Essay: follow the handout we went over. Staple your original underneath the Revision.


English 9 Homework for Monday, Dec. 14:

1. Romeo and Juliet: You are to write a proper paragraph on how Lucas Cranach's 1525 painting, "Cupid Complaining to Venus," relates to Romeo and his problem.  

This is a well-developed, organized paragraph, word-processed, double-spaces, 12 point font, Times New Roman.

English 9 Homework for Friday, Dec. 11:

1. Go online and PRINT an excellent overview of Act 1, Scenes 1-5. 

2. Do questions 1-3 in Act 1, scene i. Write in full sentences and develop your answers.  Each answer should be 2 or more sentences. A direct reference is a word-for-word quote from the text.


English 10 Homework for Friday, Dec. 11:

1. S.I.F.T. : Have your "Ozymandias" S.I.F.T. completed to the best of your ability for Friday.  Follow the format, word-process it following the format.  Write in full sentences, and DEVELOP YOUR ANSWERS.

English 10 Homework for Thursday, Dec. 10:

C Block: Let's start filling the box with food!

1. B and C Blocks: You are doing the S.I.F.T. of the poem "Ozymandias".

a. Read the poem as many times as you need to, to get the meaning of the poem, and the flow of the writing.

b. Look up words that you don't know- and write them down.

c. Use your handout "Poetic Devices and Figurative Language" to help you.

d. What is the "mood" of the poem? Look up mood words and print out a good page of them.

e. Using your handout "Poetic Devices and Figurative Language", decide what type of poem it is.

f. Theme: What truth or insight into life does this poem show us?

*Bring your work for the S.I.F.T., tomorrow, so if you finish early, you can work on the S.I.F.T. We will go over it together on Friday.

For Monday: Sentence-by-sentence revision of your Orwell, Crane, Plato, essay is due.   


English 9 Homework for Thursday, Dec. 10:

1. Complete all the homework you did not do yesterday.

2. Keep good notes in your Binder: put all your work in the Poetry section of your Binder.

3. Characters and Plot of Act I: Identify all the characters in Act 1. Do the following:

a. Write down each character's names and who they are.

b. Identify which family they are aligned with (Montagues or Capulets).

c. Go online to get an excellent overview of Act I, scenes 1 to 5.

English 9 Homework for Wednesday, Dec. 9:

Romeo and Juliet: 

1. Read the Handout "Verona," to give you a sense of its history.         

2. Go online and look at visuals of Verona, particularly the older parts of it. Also get a sense of the tourism there. Have some interesting facts to share with the class.

3. At the top of page 533, is the Prologue to the play. It is written as a sonnet. What is a sonnet? Look it up.  How many lines are there in a sonnet? 

4. Read the sonnet several times, look up words that you do not know: dignity, grudge, mutiny, civil, fatal, loins, piteous, misadventured, star-crossed, toil, naught, strife and doth. 

5. Do the "Romeo and Juliet Prologue Questions" 1-6.


English 10 Homework for Thursday, Dec. 10:

1. B and C Blocks: Do a S.I.F.T. of the poem "Oxymandias" this evening. 1. Read the poem many times to get the flow of the poem and the meaning. 2. Look up words that you don't know. 3. Use your Handout "Poetic Devices and Figurative Language" to help you.  4. What is the "mood" of the poem? Look up mood words. 5. Using your Handout in 3, decide what type of poem it is. 6. Theme: what truth or insight about life does it show us? 

In other words: Do a S.I.F.T. to the best of your ability.

English 10 Homework for Tuesday the 8th:

1. C Block: Read and do the multiple choice for the poem, "The Lanyard." Then do the same with short story, "Winners." Then do the MC on page 20. Do not start writing synthesis; however, you can jot down a few ideas in short bullets (or not).

2. B Block: Read "The Highest Tide" and do the MC. Then read "Junk Journey" and do the MC. Then do the two MC questions on page 20. Do not start writing; however, you can jot down a few ideas in short bullets (or not).

3. C and B: Do a sentence-by-sentence revision of your Synthesis Essay: Orwell, Crane, Plato. Do this by correcting any sentence that has a error in it, and underline the revision. This  is revision is due Friday.

 


English 9 Homework for Tuesday, 8th:

1. Romeo and Juliet: Quiz on Shakespearean Tragedy, Elements of Tragedy, Characteristics of the Tragic Hero, AND the terms on page 525 of the Responding to Literature Text. Read carefully and know your terms. You do not need to write a paragraph on each, but know the basics of each term.

This Weekend's Work: English 10 Homework for Fri. to Mon: Dec. 4 :

1. Synthesis Essay: Those of you who have not handed in your essay, need to get it in by 8:20 on Monday.

2. Prompt: Over the weekend write a 4-5 paragraph essay on the following: People's understanding of the world changes over time. Remember that is an essay that can be in the first person point of view. This is due Monday at the beginning of class. You should word-process this essay, as you have the ability to change, delete etc.

3. Poetry: Read the poems: "Follower", "The Blizzard", and "The Lonely Land" and do the multiple choice.  Always refer back to the poems when you do the multiple choice. Due Monday.

*Look up words you don't know, and read the poems 3 or 4 times before you do the multiple choice.

*Use the glossary that each text has at the bottom of the page.

English 9 Homework for Monday, Dec. 7th:

1. Shakespeare Quiz: Finish all the research. Write developed answers.

2.  Paragraph Prompt: choose one of the prompts on the pink T/F handout, and write a well-developed, thoughtful paragraph on what you understand and believe about it. Include examples. Double-space your work, and word process it. Care about your written expression by looking it over a several times for sentence structure, vocabulary, and the flow of your ideas. The writing counts.

English 9 Homework for Friday, Dec. 4:

1. Introduction to Shakespeare Quiz: Do questions 1 to the end of 6. Use your Textbook, the Handout, and Research online.  Make sure to write your answers in full sentences, and in more multiple sentences: whatever is required to answer it well.

For Question 6, go online and look at Shakespeare's Theatre in London, that was rebuilt exactly as it was in his time. What was it named and when was it rebuilt?

English 9 Homework for Thursday, Dec. 3:

1. Romeo and Juliet: Start your "Introduction to Shakespeare" Quiz. You will need to read the "London Life" Handout and pages 526-529 of your Responding to Literature text.  You will also need to do some Research.  You can find some information on line. 

Tonight, you are to do start with question #1 Research: When was the "Elizabethan Era." Why was it named this? Describe the following: the life, religion, the wars, the arts. Write short paragraphs (4-6 sentences each). You can work with a partner online.

Get a good start.

1. Finalize your Visual and your Oral Presentation. Be ready with your questions and all other activities, so you are prepared and ready to engage the class. I would suggest that you rehearse before tomorrow. 

Please have a copy of your script for me, tomorrow.


English 10 B Block Homework for Wed. 3:

1. Read "Great-Aunt Rebecca" and do the multiple choice.  Then read "Tamar" and do all the multiple choice, to the end of Page 20. 

2. In point form do the synthesis essay Comparing and Contrasting how the speaker in "Great-Aunt Rebecca" and the narrator in "Tamar" are affected by their relationship with an older person. Full essay draft: Introduction, two well-developed Body Paragraphs, and a Conclusion.
