English 9 Homework for Tonight and on to Monday, Nov. 2:

1. The House of the Scorpion: Read Chapters 6 and 7 this evening. Tomorrow in class, work in your Expert Groups on the questions for these chapters. Do them well. They should be small paragraphs (2-4 sentences each).  Make sure that you help each other to understand the story.  

Also in your groups, find a simile and a metaphor if you can, and explain them.

Weekend Homework: The House of the Scorpion. You should be reading Chapters 8 and 9 over the weekend and completing the questions by Tuesday.


English 10 Homework for Friday, Oct. 30 to Monday, Nov. 2:

1. Animal Farm: Tonight's homework is to start reading Chapter 6 and 7 of Animal Farm and start the questions. Make sure you are developing your answers and giving supporting examples.

You are to finish reading Chapter 6 and 7  AND to all the questions by Monday. 

**All incomplete work is due on Monday at 8:15.

English 9 Homework for Thursday, Oct. 29:

1. House of the Scorpion Essay: You could be working on your ideas this evening, finding excellent examples and discussion for your essay.

Ms. Henrickson will get you started in the morning.  You are to sit where you were yesterday during the block. You are to work quietly and seriously.  I will be back before you leave. 


English 10 Homework for Thursday, Oct. 29:

1. Animal Farm Essay: You should be re-reading Chapters 1-5 if you need to, so you have more understanding and more ideas for your essay.  **You should also make sure your Thesis Statement is more than my question on the board.  A thesis statement is the ANSWER TO THE QUESTION. It is the "WHY"!! 

I will be NOT be here at 7:30am tomorrow, as I have an appointment at 8am. However, I will be here at lunch time.

***All work that has not been handed in, must come in tomorrow.

English 10 Homework for Wednesday, Oct. 28:

1. In-Class Essay: This will be a 4 or 5 paragraph Essay: not really lengthy, but sufficient. You must read Chapters 1-5.  By reading Chapter Five carefully, you will have more to work with. 

You must also understand the basics of Socialism, as that is what Old Major wanted to create.

Also, look at the types of Propaganda at the bottom of the page in the Handout I gave you at the beginning of all this. They, too, could come in handy.

You will get the question at the beginning of the class, and work on an outline of ideas. Then you will write Wednesday and Thursday.

English 9 Homework for Thursday, Oct. 22:

1. House of the Scorpion: You are working on your Expert Roles, in class and at home. Bring all your work tomorrow so you can work with your Expert Group. You are creating thoughtful Literature Circle roles, that will inspire conversation, and a deeper understanding of the text. Your role is to be completed Monday, is to be word-processed, and is to include two copies. 

I'll see all the ROS Group tomorrow morning at 8 am.


English 10 Homework for Thursday, Oct. 22:

1. Animal Farm: You are working in class, and at home, to create thoughtful Literature Circle roles. They need to inspire conversation, and create deeper understanding of the text. These are to be word-processed and formatted according to the exemplars.

Also, each of you must chose a different  Examinable Term, that can be applied to a specific part of this section of novel. You are each teaching a different one, by having your group members identify it, explain it as a term, then apply it to the story.

English 10 Homework for Wednesday, Oct. 21:

1. Animal Farm: Do all the questions for Chapters 2, 3, and 4. These must be completed before you start your work in your Expert Literature Groups tomorrow.  Everyone in your group must have a complete set of answers by tomorrow - and each of you must understand them. These answers are thoughtful and developed. You should try to integrate direct references into some your answers.  YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO THE PARAGRAPH QUESTION FOR CHAPTER 3 (YET).

2. Revision of "Old Major" paragraph is due Monday, the 26th. Please staple the original underneath.  Follow the Criteria Handout.

1. House of the Scorpion: Finish reading the five chapters and completing all of the chapter questions. When you write an answer, incorporate the question into it, so it makes sense to someone who has not read the story. Also, please bring all your work to class, daily.

1. House of the Scorpion:  You are reading Chapters 1-5, pages 2 to 49, by Wednesday. Read carefully. Keep the question package beside you as you read. In class, you can be working on the questions for these chapters.

**Also find a metaphor and a simile for each chapter, if there is one.

 

English 10 Homework for Tuesday, Oct. 20:

1. Election Coverage: watch the news channels tonight. From 5pm to 7pm we should know how things are going.  Stay tuned and come tomorrow with a clear sense of what has happened and why.

2. Animal Farm: Read Chapters 1-4 and be ready to work in your Expert Groups tomorrow on your Roles.

English 9 Homework for Monday, Oct. 19:

1. Any work that is due must come in on Monday. No later.

2. House of the Scorpion: do a good job of the Pre-research. We will share it on Monday. 

3. Also, come with some good examples of metaphors and similes. Be prepared to explain them - at least 3 for each, and not the examples below.

ie. metaphor 1: The middle of the Pacific Ocean is a dragon that is hard to tame.     

ie. metaphor 2: My English teacher is a dictionary of esoteric words.

ie. simile 1: Your face is like book that reads of strange matters.

ie. simile 2: His words fell soft, like snow on the ground.

 


English 10 Homework for Monday, Oct. 19:

1. Oral Presentations: Declaring Your Candidate. Each of you will declare your favoured candidate and explain why. This will be marked. Practice your speech; but you may have notes to refer to.

2. Revisions of "The Allegory and Me" are also due on Monday. Staple the original underneath the revised essay. Please underline all the changes you made. Word Process.

3.  Themes and Literary Concepts: make sure you have completed the Themes and Literary Concepts on the first page of the Animal Farm Handout. I will check them Monday. C Block is done!

4. Personal Edit Checklist:  re-format your Checklist if you have to, and hand it in on Monday. B Block you need to put it in the basket. 

****For Tuesday: Read Animal Farm, Chapters 1-4. On Tuesday you will be in your expert groups so you may start working on your Literature Circle Roles.

English 10 Homework for Friday, Oct. 16:

  1. The Themes, Literary Concepts, Vocabulary, and Propaganda, were due today. Bring them all tomorrow. Also, Chapter 1 Glossary should be completed. Bring it all tomorrow.

 2. Word process your Personal Editing Checklist: make 2 copies, one for your Binder and one for me. Follow the exemplar copy on the board.  I will approve it or ask you do again.


English 9 Homework for Friday, Oct. 16:

1. Revisions of the Synthesis Essay are due. Some of you have not submitted them: Elijah, Brendon, Caitlin, Kaitlyn, Tiffany, Samantha Yang.

2. You also must hand in the two paragraphs from "A Christmas Memory." Elijah, Brendon, ,Kaitlyn, Tiffany, Christian.

2. Anticipation Guide and Getting the "Lay of the Land" should be finished.

3. Read "Reproductive and Therapeutic Cloning are Fundamentally Different." After reading the article two times, write a paragraph explaining the differences between cloning and stem cell research. This paragraph should be word-processed and double-spaced. Your Introduction should include author, title and the main point. The body of the paragraph explains the differences. The concluding sentence of the paragraph reminds us of the main point.

2. Finish the two paragraphs for "A Christmas Memory" at the latest Thursday. Preferably tomorrow.


English 10 Homework for Oct. 13 - 19:

1. Animal Farm: Read to the end of Chapter 1. Look up words and terms you do not know. Read carefully and twice. Add vocabulary to a Glossary for Animal Farm.

2. Propaganda Techniques at the bottom of the 1st page of the handout, are due tomorrow. Make sure you have the definition and an example, or two, for each technique.

3. Themes, Literary Concepts (at the top of the 1st page are due on Thursday. These, also need a definition and an example.

4. Personal Editing Checklist: Due Friday, using the format that was shown to you.

5. Revisions of "The Allegory and Me" are due Monday, 19th. Underline all the changes you make. Staple the Original essay underneath your revision.

6. Your Vote: be prepared on Monday the 19th to declare your candidate, in class, giving your reasons as to why you are voting that way. This will be a two minute oral presentation - declaration in front of the class.

English 9 Homework for Tuesday, Oct. 13:

1. Any work that you have not handed in is due on Tuesday at the beginning of the block. 

2. Update your Glossary of words and terms. I will have you write a paragraph using some of them, next week.

3. Essay Revisions: Rewrite your essay and improve it in all the ways you need to.  This will come in next Thursday. Underline all the things you changed - and staple the Original essay underneath the revised one.

4. Short Story: "A Christmas Memory" by Truman Capote:  Read the story carefully and more than once. Find 5 examples of vivid imagery in the story: for each of them, write out the image, identify what kind of imagery is being used, and then explain it. See below.

Example:                                                                 

a. Write out the full image from the text.

b. Identify what kind of image it is: sight, taste, smell, sound or touch.  

c. Explain the image in the context of the story.

 


English 10 Homework for Tuesday, Oct. 13:

**If you were not here on Friday, I expect you to read the blog, do the work, and hand it in on Tuesday.

1.  All students will hand in a multi-paragraph essay on the following:  Draw generalizations (truths) about what causes a revolution, and the immediate and long range effects of a revolution. Use examples from the notes you made from the revolutions you have studied. 

You should have a Introductory Paragraph that sets up the essay and makes an important general point (thesis) about revolutions. You need a minimum of two body paragraphs, preferably more, and a concluding paragraph that ends on a general note/your understanding of revolutions. You will be marked on the structure of the essay, your understanding of the revolutions, your ability to use this ideas, and your written expression.  NO 1st PERSON. THIS IS ANALYSIS. NO "me" "I" or "you".

This is due on Tuesday: I am not accepting late work on this assignment. If you are sick on Tuesday, email it to me : dtyre@sd38.bc.ca. 

If you were not in class on Friday, you are expected to read this blog and to do the work.

a) add words and definitions that you don't know, to your Glossary. 

b) Do question 1: give 2 examples        

c) Do question 2: research Apartheid carefully, the time, place, and describe the society - and discuss how this story can be seen as a metaphor for the Apartheid system.

1. Synthesis Essay: Finish your final draft of your essay. Don't print it until you have read it very carefully, a few times.  Use 12 pt. font, Times New Roman, and double-space. Underline your Thesis statement, your Topic Sentences of your Body Paragraphs, and your Thesis Reworded.


English 10 Homework for Thursday, Oct. 8:

1. Any work that was not finished, or was not handed in, it is due tomorrow at 8:20 am in my In Basket.  Just come into the room and put your work in it.

2. In your groups, each person choses a Revolution and researches tonight, the causes and effects, both immediate and long term, of that revolution. 

3. Issues: Climate Change, Refugee Crisis, Bill C-24, Keystone Pipeline, Bill C-51. Be working on these issues over the next several days, so that you are prepared to declare the Candidate you are going to vote for on Oct. 19th. You will stand and declare the Candidate you are voting for and why you voted for them : what issues were important to you and why).

English 9 Homework for Wed. October 7:

1. Synthesis Essay: Revise your Introduction, and Body Paragraph #1 and #2. Please double-space your work, and read it over a few times, very carefully, before you print it out and bring it tomorrow to class. 

Tomorrow, you will be working on your Concluding paragraph. This is four or five sentences that end your essay and leaves the reader understanding the importance of the essay. In other words (without actually saying it), what do these stories teach us and show us about human nature that is important. What do we learn?

1. Synthesis Essay: Revise Introduction and Body Paragraph #1 so that it is on the same page; and improve both.

2. Body Paragraph #2: Using the ideas you worked on over the weekend, develop Body Paragraph #2. 

Be sure to underline your Thesis Statement in the Introduction, and the Topic Sentence of your Body Paragraph 2.

English 9 Homework for Monday, Oct. 5:

**Elijah and Ben: Your final drafts of "The Sniper" Paragraph are due Monday.

Homework for EVERBODY:

1. Synthesis Essay

1) Rewrite and revise your Introductory Paragraph and the Thesis Statement if you need to.  

2) Body Paragraph #2: Write your Topic Sentence and the paragraph. The Topic Sentence should develop a major point in the Thesis Statement. Then, write the full paragraph following instructions on the Handout: major supporting points that include examples. Try integrating a quote in one of your sentences. And then conclude the paragraph.

3) If you want to you can write out some ideas for Body Paragraph #2 in bullet form.

 

English 10 Homework for Monday, Oct. 5:

1. Essay: Plato and Me: You are to have your Introduction, and 2 of 3 Body Paragraphs completed by Monday. This is to be hand written, and double-spaced. Don't hesitate to look back on all I have written on this assignment in my other blogs, particularly, Tues. and Wed (29th and 30th of Sept.)

Use the instructions and guidelines I gave you today, and look at the others.

2. Examinable Terms are still due on Wednesday.

3. Election Research is due Thursday: all of it.

a. Make sure you are working on the Election Issues that are listed on the board. Your are to research and write notes to show your understanding of each issue.

1. Essay Outline: this evening you are revising your Introductory Paragraph, unless I have already approved it.

2. You are working on Body Paragraph #1 (and maybe Body Paragraph #2 if you get that far.) These BP's should be done in bullet form first: That is, you are thinking of the ideas and examples you are going to write, that will develop your Thesis Statement in the Introduction.

IE: Body Paragraph #1: Topic Sentence: this should develop something important in the Thesis:
