Ms. Tyre's English 10 Homework for Thursday, Oct. 10:

1. We will finish the Presentations tomorrow, but your work tonight is to revisit your "Allegory of the Cave" tonight and start improving it.  You need to look at those prisoners and what they teach us.  How do they behave, what does it do to them?  What is this shadow world and how does it reflect how we live? Who are the puppeters in our world?  What does this allegory show about human nature and our ability to "see" the truth around us? What does the prisoner who escapes endure?  What is the process by which he can finally "see"? There are several steps: what are they?  What does this tell us about how we learn?  What is the response of the other prisoners when he returns to enlighten them?  Why do they respond this way?

This is an allegory that shows us some very unflattering aspects of human beings.  Do we like the truth?  How do we know the truth?  What is it to be educated?  What do most people prefer to live in: the cave or the light? Is it better to acknowledge one's ignorance or pretend we know things we don't?  Which person as the edge: the one who admits it or the one who think they know the truth?

What does the allegory promote as of guide for living a truer life?
