Ms. Tyre's English 11 Homework for Tues. April 1:

1. The Jade Peony Literature Circle Roles: you should be improving your LC role for tomorrow's LC with your original group. Your written role should be word-processed, follow my instructions on the handout, and be well-developed and thoughtful.  I will be evaluating these written roles.

I expect a Literature Circle to take two blocks, if you are all working/discussing as you should.

2. Any work not handed in today is due tomorrow.

1. Revise "Cloning Paragraph": Please improve your paragraph, underlining all changes, and staple the original underneath the revision.

2. Booktalk #2 is due Friday. Be working on this throughout the week.

Ms. Tyre's English 11 Homework for Spring Break:

1. Sentence-by-Sentence Revision for "Internet and Nature" essay: Follow the instructions I gave you in class and the handout I gave you. Due Monday, March 31st. (word-process)

2. VOM Essay Revision in this order: 1) Improve your Thesis Statement if necessary.  2) Rewrite your weakest Body Paragraph and underline all the changes you make (word-process this also and double-space).  3) Rewrite your Concluding Paragraph also and universalize it after the Thesis-Reworded (word-process etc, like the other).  Staple your original essay underneath the revisions. Due Monday, March 1.

3) The Jade Peony: Read "Part One: Jook-Liang, Only Sister." Work on the Literature Circle Role you were assigned, following my instructions on the Handout. Read Part One carefully first, then go back and work on your role.  Make sure you write up all the questions and other aspects of your role, following my instructions on the Handout.  Bring them in on Monday the 31st to I can have a look at them and give you feedback. We will start the Literature Circle on Tuesday, April 1.

Have a great break and get your work done steadily, not frantically.  See you March 31!!

1. Follow the instructions on your Handout "March Break Homework for English 9." This work is due on Monday, March 31st.  Word- Process the Cloning Paragraph in the usual way.  You should word-process all your work but the Anticipation Guide.

Ms. Tyre's English 11 Homework for Thurs. March 13:

1. You should be reviewing your stories tonight and making sure you are ready for in-class essay tomorrow, so you feel confident. 

You are advised to come at 7:30 am tomorrow to get started. I will be here to get you started and you will have until 8:20. I will collect your work and see you again in C Block. You will have all this block, and Lunch Break to finish if you need to.  I encourage you to take all this time so that you can look over your essay and revise before you hand it in.


Ms. Tyre's English 9 Homework for Thurs. March 13:

Your Homework Tonight - is to rewrite your weakest Body Paragraph from the essay "Sentry" and "The Sniper."  

1) Choose your weakest Body Paragraph that is less clear, less developed, and that has the most errors. Please word process it, double-space it, 12 pt font etc. 

2) When you have rewritten it and checked it very carefully, you are to underlines all the changes you have made.  

3) Staple your original essay underneath your rewritten paragraph. 

4) At the top of the page on your revised paragraph, write the title: 

                 Body Paragraph #_____ 

5) Please hand it in the morning before 1st block or before the bell goes when you come to class.

1. Complete Outline for your Synthesis Essay tomorrow: Follow instructions for making your Acceptable Outline for your in-class essay. Bring this outline with you so that you can begin writing your in-class essay tomorrow. 


Ms. Tyre's English 11 Homework for Wed. March 12:

1. Prepare for Synthesis Essay: You should have all your notes finalized tonight, including: 

1) the values you are going to discuss  

2) the examples you are choosing, and 

3) your points of synthesis.

From this well-developed and organized document, (which I will be evaluating) you will create your outline in class tomorrow - and start your essay.  Make sure you have your transition sheet with you, as you will need to choose appropriate transitions to move back and forth between stories as you compare and contrast.

Ms. Tyre's English 11 Homework for Tues. Mar. 11:

1. Double Entry Chart of two stories values: 

A) To start with, you should organize your values for each story on a two column chart.  

B) After you have identified the values in each story, you must give concrete examples of them from the stories, and explain them. Also some values will have more than one example in the story.  

C) After you have completed each story's values, and included many examples, create another page that show a synthesis of the values in these two stories.  You need to show and explain how the values are similar and also how they are not.  You must use details from the story, taking examples and references from the plots, characters, themes etc. to make your case. 

You are to work on it tonight and tomorrow in class.  I expect you all to do your own thinking at home and to come with ideas to share tomorrow. 


Ms. Tyre's English 9 Homework for Tues. Mar. 11:

1. Second Draft of Synthesis Essay: From your edited draft today, rewrite/improve your essay. and word-process it, Times New Roman, double spaced, underlined thesis statments and TSs and CSs, then print it out.  Please underline all the changes you make in this second draft.  Then staple the 1st Draft underneath the 2nd - so the new draft is on top.

Those of you who did not do your 1st Draft this weekend, write your fully-developed 1st Draft in the same as above. Bring it with you.

2. Due Thursday: Second Draft of "Sentry" and "The Sniper" Character, Theme and Conclusion Paragraphs : You are to improve each of these paragraphs, not only by considering your editor's recommendations, but your own. Of course, word-processed etc. like my instructions above.  Please staple the revised paragraphs on top of the original.

Ms. Tyre's English 11 Homework for Mon. March 10:

1. Synthesis of the short stories "A Christmas Memory" and "The Jade Peony": 

You are to be working on the following question: "How are the values that Grandmama passes down to Sek-Lung, in "The Jade Peony" by Wayson Choy, reflected in Truman Capote's story "A Christmas Memory"?

This a synthesis of two stories that requires you to show similarities between the two stories. You are to identify these values, and show through textual examples how they are similar. This will require understanding the characters, plot-conflicts,  irony, and theme -  and including some imagery(vivid description) that also shows synthesis.

You are to come with a number of points and examples on Monday. I suggest you use your large chart. You will be in small groups working on it Monday.


Ms. Tyre's English 9 Homework for Monday, March 10:

1. First Draft Essay - Synthesis of "Thank You, M'am" and "A Mother in Mannville":

You are to take all the ideas/points from your two days of discussion in class and write a first draft essay. Please look carefully at the "Sentry" and "The Sniper" essay for format and style. But also look at the kinds of writing errors you make and try to improve.

You must have a Thesis Statement as the last sentence of the Introduction : it is the main idea of the essay. Then you are to write three Body Paragraphs, each with a topic sentence where you identify the element of synthesis: BP#1: setting and conflict, BP#2: Character, and BP#3: Themes.  Make sure to use good examples to show what you are discussing.

You are to conclude in your Concluding Paragraph as you did before: Thesis Reworded, then universalize to the real world. 

Double-space, 12 point font, Times New Roman.

Ms. Tyre's English 11 Homework for Tues. March 4:

1. Two sets of articles: (2 Internet articles, 2 Nature ): Please work on the synthesis of ideas. Please complete your synthesis of each set of articles. Now you need to bring them together (all four) to show their relationship with each other. Try to have this ready for sharing in your groups tomorrow.  This is going to lead you to a self-reflection, using what you learned from these articles and applying them to yourself.


Ms. Tyre's English 9 Homework for Tues. March 4:

Full Name, Block, Date on top right hand corner on both assignments.

1. Synthesis Essay is due: Make sure you read it over several times, sentence by sentence, and correct any writing errors you find before you print.

2. Booktalk Reflection: If you did not finish it in class today, please finish it tonight and hand it in Tuesday.

3. New Novel: Please return your novel and start looking for another to read that captures your interest - say...by Friday?
