Ms. Tyre's Homework for Monday, June 3rd:

1. Any Revisions for the Sonnet Paragraph that have not been handed by Friday, are due Monday.

2. Finish your Reflection Log entry on your thoughts and reactions to the section of the movie we viewed today (Friday).

3. Write a proper paragraph  on the following question:  
  • When Mercutio says "a plague on both your houses," he is really voicing one of the central themes of the play.  Summarize the events that make the line prophetic, and state why it is "death" to be either a Montague or a Capulet.
  • look up words or concepts you do not understand.

Ms. Tyre's English 9 Homework - Tuesday, May 28th: 

1. Work on the Revision of your Sonnet Paragraph.  This should come in over the next few days. Please staple the original paragraph underneath the Revision.

2. Do Act 2, scene 1 and 2 questions for tomorrow.  Use the script and Shakespeare Navigator.  Try to integrate a phrase or line in some of your answers, to practice this technique.
 

Ms. Tyre's English 12 Homework due Wed. May 29:

1. All Revisions of your Romantic Art Paragraph or Essay.
2. Working on your Roles for Literature Circle #3 on Frankenstein. 
  • 1 Poet, 4 Discussion Directors, 4 Theme Enrichers, 3 Romantic Art Connectors
 3. Also start thinking about your Frankenstein Final Essay.  Let me know tomorrow what theme you want to develop and start jotting ideas down.  This essay will be written in class on a day that we decide together.

1. Revise your Romantic Art paragraph and hand in with the original.
2. Finish the novel and collecting ideas for your  LC roles.

Ms. Tyre's English 9 Homework that is due Monday, May 27:

1. Finish Reading Act 1, scene 5.
2. Finish all Questions for Act 1, scene 5 and any others you have not completed.
3. Finish Reflection on who you believe is the better parent. It does not need to be word-processed, but you must always care about your organization of ideas and good sentence structures. Also try to incorporate a direct reference or two from the text into your work. See below for proper style:
  •  example: Capulet tells Tybalt he is "a saucy boy" when Tybalt demands that Capulet throw Romeo out of the party (I, 5, 84).
  •  example: Mercutio rants on about Queen Mab, who runs "over men's noses as they lie asleep" causing them to dream (I, 4, 58).
  • example: When Romeo first lays eyes on Juliet at her party, he describes her as "a rich jewel in an Ethiop's ear" (I, 5, 46).  
 4. Read the Chorus Sonnet on page 79 that introduces Act 2. Read the Glossary also, so that you understand it.
5. Keep up with "Romeo and Love" handout, and create Headlines for the rest of Act 1.

I highly recommend you word-process your work (double-space, 12pt ft etc) and then attach it to the sonnet.  This will allow you to revise your work carefully before you print it.  

Ms. Tyre's English 9 Homework for Friday, May 24:

1. Do questions for Act 1, scenes 3 and 4. Write full sentences and enough of them to answer each question.  You do not have to write the paragraph question in Act 1, scene 3  (but think about it).
2. Do question 1 for Act 1, scene 5.
3. Go onto Shakespeare Navigator and find the Detailed Summary for Romeo and Juliet, Act 5
  • Read the detailed summary on the sonnet that Romeo and Juliet speak in their first meeting; and in your own words, write a proper paragraph explaining the metaphor Romeo and Juliet create.

  • Act I, scene i questions: including how Cranach's painting "Cupid Complaining to Venus" relates to Romeo. (3 sentences)  (Do not do the paragraph)

  • Complete your Headline for Act 1, scene 2
  • Romeo and Love Handout:  Look at Act I, scenes i and 2 and answer the question: Is Romeo in love with Rosaline or is he in love with the idea of being in love.  Support your answer.

Ms. Tyre's English 9 Homework: Tuesday 13th to Tuesday 21st:
1. You are working with your poetry partner on your 14 line thematic poem that is due next Tuesday:
  • It will incorporate metaphor, simile and personification. One element may be more prevalent than the others.
  • It will not be a cliche: it will be thoughtful, original, and interesting.
  • It will be word-processed on your word document so that it is pleasant to look at and read projected on the board and read by the class from their desks.
  • It will be accompanied by a poster that illustrates its central theme and what you are saying about it.  This poster should incorporate colour in a meaningful way. This poster should be large enough to be comfortably viewed from all areas of the classroom.  

    You will read your poem and explain the poster illustration in terms of the theme in your poem.

  • What its main attraction is today 
 2. Go online and look at the arrangement of a Shakespearean Sonnet:
  • how are the ideas arranged in the 14 lines
  • how many syllables in each line
  • what is the rhythm in each line : iambic pentameter explained

Ms. Tyre's English 12 Homework due Monday/Tues, May 13/14

1. Frankenstein: Following proper paragraph structure: Topic Sentence that introduces the poem/author or painting/artist and the main point (connection) to Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein. (1 page maximum, double-spaced, 12 pt. font, Times New Roman). Please edit your work before you print it out.
  • If your LitCircle group has done the Poetry Role, your paragraph is due on Monday. This is a synthesis paragraph that shows how the poem reflects something important, ie. Romantic values, in the novel.
  • Your paragraph for the Romantic Art is due on Tuesday. This paragraph also brings together the work of art and the novel in an insightful way.   
  • You are also to read the Creature's chapters : 11 -16 by Monday and start working on the next Literature Circle roles.

1. With your partner, you are to decide what concept or thing you will write a poem about, and to let me know by tomorrowIt is not due until next Friday, May 17.  Your poem will have the following ingredients:
  • it will be 12 to 14 lines
  • it will be full of imagery: that vivid description that utilizes, simile, metaphor and personification that will require appropriate descriptive vocabulary
  • it will be original, thoughtful and interesting:  not a cliche
  • it will be word-processed for the overhead
  • it will be accompanied by a poster illustration 
  • It will be presented by in a formal presentation
  • YOU NEED TO BE WORKING ON IT RIGHT AWAY.

Finalize your Literature Circle Roles for Wednesday and Thursday Lit Circles.  
  • If you are showing Romantic Art, bring your laptop.
  • if you are the Poet, bring copies for the poems for your group.
  • We will do Dicussions Director and Poetry tomorrow and Theme Enricher and Romantic Art on Thursday. 
  • Make sure you all bring your notes on the Romantic Age values and concerns, and Gothic Elements.  You will need these for interpretation.

1. Read the poem "Sweet Like a Crow" on page 26 of your poetry text.  This is a poem that uses vivid similes (where two things that seem very different are compared in an imaginative way). Read it two or three times.
2. Create a poem using a simile, or similes,  to compare sounds.

  •  Keep ongoing notes on the connections between Victor/Creature and the Myth of Prometheus
  • Keep ongoing notes on the Gothic Elements in the story
  • Keep ongoing notes on the several themes emerging in the story.
2. For Thursday, have Chapters 1 and 2 read, and the questions completed.
