Thursday 24 April 2014

Ms. Tyre's English 11 Homework - Thursday, April 24 to Thursday, May 1:

1. Finish Reading The Jade Peony:Part Three

2. Review your Research Notes on the Invasion of China, the Fall of Hong Kong, and the attitudes toward Japanese-Canadians.

3. Collect "direct references" to the war in the novel; and for each reference explain the effect on the story, particularly character, conflict and theme. (one reference may have an effect one or two or all of these elements). Have at least 15 of these references. The format for each is as follows:

Chapter 8: Reference p. 130: In this reference, Suling, Sekky's stepmother's best friend, sent a letter to her from China.  She wrote, "Today, the farmers tell us landlords and Christians are being arrested in the Outer Districts near Tsingyuan. Some are beheaded. It is defficult to write. Pray for us."

This is the first passage that shows the invasion of China by the Japanese. It takes place in Canton, China, where the Japanese are bombing villages and killing civilians in horrific ways.  Since Suling, Stepmother's best friend lives there, and she wants her friend to eventually come to Canada, Stepmother is very worried about her friend's survival.

Those of you who are still reading, know that you will be collecting these references now or when you finish.
