Ms. Tyre's English 9 preparations for Wednesday and Thursday In-Class writing, May 7 and 8:
1. After reading the novel The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer, many themes emerge. One of those themes is the influence of heredity and environment on a child's development. What one of these does her story suggest is more influential?
a) Your topic sentence introduces the author, title, and answers the question. Your first sentence or two after the TS should make the story clear (to a stranger).
b) You now must show and explain using 3 appropiate and powerful examples from the story to make your case.
c) The Concluding Sentence reminds us of the main point and ends the discussion well.
(A Block: you will finish your 1st paragraph before you start this last piece of writing.)

2. Also bring your Vocabulary pages to put in the file so you can use them next week.
3. One of the main themes in Choy's novel is cultural conflict. Choose three characters from The Jade Peony and start thinking about how each are affected by it. I will give you a more developed question on Monday.
