English 10 Homework for Monday, Oct. 6:

1. Please print out the document at the following address: http://quizlet.com/15475808/grade-10-english-provincial-examinable-terms-devices

These are Grade 10 Examinable Terms for the Provincial Exam.  It is 7 or 8 pages. Please put it in your Elements of Literature section of your binder.

2. Your "Personal Reflection on the Environment" is due at the beginning of class, Monday. This is a word-processed multi-paragraph assignment. It is your thoughts, ideas, concerns, about the subject, using references/examples from the  readings and visuals we have studied. It is a sincere, thoughtful, personal response to it all.  Please use Times New Roman or Calibri, 12 point font, and use 1.5 to 2 spacing. Please do not add extra spaces between paragraphs, but simply indent when you re-paragraph.

The expression "I think" is overused and should be eliminated or reduced in your writing. Say what you feel and think, of course, but repetitive terms like this one can reduce the effect of your writing.

For Example:

weak: I think that Burtynsky's film, "Manufactured Landscapes,"is a powerful way of showing our rampant consumption and throwaway culture.

stronger: Burtynsky's visuals in "Manufactured Landscapes" are fascinating and disturbing, in showing how our rampant consumption and our throwaway culture, leaves the environment, and those who live in it, poisoned.

use imagery( vivid description) : I contribute to the mountains of e-waste that is shipped to China and left to leach industrial toxins into the earth. The beaming children who played in these hills of toxic waste, in one scene, made me feel...

Think about: What do you do with your waste? How do you contribute to all this.  What are doing or not doing in your part of the planet .... make connections with your life, and in other ways.

Please bring all your "April 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains"materials with you, Monday. We will work on them in class.

1. Revision of the synthesis essay: "The Horses" and "Vegetable Gardens on Mars." You all need to revise this short essay by improving your Introduction, Thesis, organization of ideas, the use of direct references from the texts - properly integrated into your sentences, citations, and the concluding paragraph that should universalize the ideas, not summarize.

This is not due until Monday, October 6.  Please word-process, double-space, and underline or highlight your changes.  Please staple your original paragraph behind you revised one.

English 10 Homework Tonight and Thurs:

1. Please look at yesterday's entry for instructions.  Remember, this is a personal (1st Person) piece of writing where you are reflecting on Global Warming, Pacific Garbage Patch, "Manufactured Landscapes" and readings etc.   It should have an Introduction and Conclusion, and well-developed paragraphs of thoughtful content that is your own original response to the research you have been doing, including the discussions we have had, and the visuals you have seen. You are not writing to tell me what you researched, but to respond, personally, to what you are learning. What do you feel, think, hope, wish, what are the possibilities, what else do you know about all this and what will you do in your future?  These are just ideas.  It is your personal response to all of what we have looked at, to date.

It is due at the end of your block on Friday.

Each body paragraph requires a Topic Sentence and a Concluding Sentence. A body paragraph should have one central topic with sufficient discussion of the topic.  Eight sentences approximately.  If it goes to long, simply re-paragraph, making it clear that you are continuing the topic you are on.

Ask questions in class tomorrow if you need to.
